Agricultural Mechanisation & Rural Employment
This concept note demonstrates how modern agricultural mechanisation of field operations can contribute to slowing down rural-to-urban migration trends of young people, by generating employment opportunities both on and off-farm
Modern mechanisation might be a game-changer to the African farming sector which is typically characterised by high levels of labour inputs and drudgery. It makes farming unattractive to young people who often prefer being unemployed or day-labourers in a town over pursuing a career in farming – or as they see it: the tough life of a farmer.
The concept paper has been developed in the frame of the GIZ project “Agricultural Mechanisation and Technology for Smallholder Productivity” (AMTP) in Ethiopia.
